Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Political patronage, where politicians provide favors or benefits to their supporters in exchange for political loyalty and votes, plays a significant role in electoral competitiveness. In Sokoto South LGA, Sokoto State, political patronage is often used as a tool to secure votes and suppress political opposition, influencing the outcomes of local elections (Rashid & Bello, 2024). This study will examine how political patronage in Sokoto South LGA affects the competitiveness of elections, focusing on its impact on the diversity of candidates, voter behavior, and political dynamics. Studies suggest that while political patronage can mobilize support, it often leads to the monopolization of power by a few individuals and discourages genuine political competition (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023). By investigating the effects of patronage politics on electoral competitiveness, this study will provide important insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by democratic processes at the local level.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political patronage in Sokoto South LGA has resulted in reduced electoral competitiveness, as political elites often use patronage networks to consolidate power and marginalize opposition candidates (Aminu & Garba, 2023). It will explore how patronage affects voter preferences, party politics, and the ability of new political actors to challenge incumbents in Sokoto South LGA.
